What to Expect During Treatment
One of the most effective ways to reduce dental anxiety is simply to know what to expect. When patients understand each step of their treatment, the unfamiliar becomes familiar — and fear gives way to cooperation and confidence.
Before Treatment Begins
At Smilecraft, every treatment plan is discussed thoroughly with the patient before any irreversible procedure begins. This discussion covers:
- What the treatment involves, step by step
- How long the procedure will take
- What sensations are normal (pressure, vibration) and what is not (sharp pain — which should be reported immediately so more anaesthetic can be administered)
- What post-treatment care is required
- When to expect the final result
Patients are encouraged to ask questions — no question is too basic, and we take time to answer fully.
During the Procedure
Modern dental anaesthesia is highly effective. The injection itself is made as comfortable as possible using topical anaesthetic gel applied to the gum before the needle. Once anaesthetic has taken effect, the procedure should be entirely pain-free.
Patients are encouraged to use a signal — typically raising a hand — if they need the dentist to pause. This control reduces anxiety significantly.
For highly anxious patients, options include:
- Conscious sedation (intravenous sedation)
- Inhalation sedation (nitrous oxide / "laughing gas")
- Detailed pre-appointment briefings to prepare thoroughly
After Treatment
Post-treatment expectations are explained clearly: how long numbness will last, what to eat and avoid, when to expect sensitivity to resolve, and what symptoms warrant a call to the practice.
At Smilecraft, informed patients are our goal. We believe that transparency and clear communication are not just courtesies — they are an essential part of clinical care.
