The Surgical Procedure – A Pain-Free Routine

For many patients, the word "surgery" conjures images of pain and discomfort. When it comes to dental implant placement, however, the reality is quite different. Modern implant surgery, performed under effective local anaesthesia, is a routine outpatient procedure that the vast majority of patients describe as significantly less uncomfortable than they anticipated.

Before the Procedure

Thorough preparation is the foundation of a successful implant procedure. At Smilecraft, this includes a complete diagnostic workup: panoramic X-ray, CBCT (cone beam CT) scan for precise three-dimensional bone assessment, and digital implant planning. By the time the patient enters the treatment room, the clinician has a complete surgical plan — including the precise position, angle, and depth of each implant.

Pre-operative instructions are discussed with the patient in advance: whether to take prescribed antibiotics, how to prepare on the day of the procedure, and what to expect during recovery.

The Day of Surgery

The procedure begins with thorough local anaesthesia. Modern anaesthetic agents are highly effective, and the vast majority of patients feel only pressure — not pain — during the procedure. For anxious patients, conscious sedation (intravenous sedation) is available on request.

The surgery itself involves:

1. A small incision in the gum to expose the underlying bone (or a flapless technique in selected cases)
2. Preparation of the implant site using a sequential series of precision drills
3. Placement of the titanium implant into the prepared site
4. Closure of the gum tissue with sutures (where required)

The procedure typically takes 30 to 90 minutes depending on the number of implants being placed and the complexity of the case.

After the Procedure

Post-operative discomfort is typically mild to moderate and well managed with standard over-the-counter pain relief. Some swelling and bruising may occur in the first few days and resolves within a week. Patients receive detailed written post-operative instructions covering diet, oral hygiene, and activity restrictions.

Osseointegration — the bonding of the implant to the bone — then proceeds over 3 to 6 months before the final restoration is placed. At Smilecraft, we monitor this process at scheduled follow-up appointments to ensure healing is progressing optimally.
