Precision Planning – CT and Digital Diagnostics

Successful implant treatment begins not in the surgery, but at the planning stage. The accuracy of digital diagnostics — and in particular cone beam CT (CBCT) imaging — is what separates a predictable, safe implant placement from one that relies on guesswork.

What Is CBCT?

Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) is a specialised X-ray technology that produces high-resolution three-dimensional images of the jaws, teeth, bone, and surrounding anatomical structures. Unlike conventional panoramic X-rays, which provide only a two-dimensional overview, CBCT allows the clinician to visualise and measure the bone in all three planes — height, width, and depth.

This is critical for implant planning, where the position, angle, and depth of each implant must be planned precisely to avoid anatomical structures (such as the inferior alveolar nerve in the lower jaw, or the sinus floor in the upper jaw) and to ensure optimal load distribution.

From Scan to Surgical Plan

At Smilecraft, CBCT data is imported into specialist implant planning software, where the clinician can:

  • Measure the available bone volume precisely
  • Visualise the position of nerves and sinus cavities
  • Virtually place implants in the ideal position
  • Plan the prosthetic outcome before any surgery takes place
  • Design and produce a surgical guide (stent) for guided implant placement

This virtual planning is then transferred to the surgical environment via a precision-fabricated surgical guide, ensuring that the implant is placed exactly where it was planned — regardless of what is visible in the open surgical site.

The Benefits for Patients

For patients, digital diagnostics and guided surgery mean:

  • Greater safety: anatomical structures are identified and avoided with precision
  • Greater predictability: the outcome can be anticipated before treatment begins
  • Shorter surgical time and reduced surgical trauma
  • The possibility of immediate loading in selected cases

At Smilecraft, precision planning is not an optional extra — it is our standard approach to every implant case. We believe that investing in thorough pre-operative diagnostics is the most important step toward a successful and lasting implant outcome.
