Oral Surgery and Focal Infection Research – In Defence of Your Health

Oral surgery and focal infection research are two disciplines that are more closely connected than most patients realise. Many of the most common oral surgical procedures — wisdom tooth removal, apicotomy, extraction of non-vital teeth — are simultaneously treatments for existing dental foci. In this sense, oral surgery at Smilecraft serves a dual purpose: restoring oral function and protecting systemic health.

Oral Surgery at Smilecraft

Our oral surgical services include:

Wisdom tooth removal: The most frequently performed oral surgical procedure. Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth are removed under local anaesthesia as a routine outpatient procedure. Complex cases can be performed under general anaesthesia.

Apicotomy (root tip resection): When a root canal-treated tooth has persistent periapical infection, surgical removal of the infected root tip and surrounding tissue can save the tooth while eliminating the focus of infection.

Extraction of non-vital and non-restorable teeth: Teeth that cannot be saved but are acting as foci of chronic infection are extracted as part of comprehensive focal infection therapy.

Implant-related surgery: Bone grafting, sinus lift, and implant placement are performed as part of our implant programme.

The Connection to Focal Infection Research

Before any elective oral surgical procedure — and as part of our routine pre-implant assessment — we perform comprehensive focal infection screening. This ensures that any hidden chronic foci are identified and addressed, whether or not they require surgical intervention.

For patients with systemic conditions known to be associated with dental foci (cardiovascular disease, joint problems, diabetes), or for patients preparing for cardiac surgery, joint replacement, or organ transplantation, focal infection clearance is an essential pre-operative step. At Smilecraft, we work collaboratively with referring physicians to provide this clearance appropriately.
