Areas of Application – Dental Restorations and Crowns

Dental restorations encompass a wide range of solutions — from simple fillings to complex full-mouth reconstructions. Understanding when different types of restorations are indicated helps patients make sense of their treatment options.

When Is a Crown Needed?

A dental crown is a cap that covers the entire visible portion of a tooth. It is indicated when:

  • A tooth has been significantly weakened by decay and does not have enough structure to support a filling or inlay
  • A tooth has been root-treated (root-treated teeth become brittle and require crown protection)
  • A tooth has fractured and the remaining structure needs protection
  • As the final restoration on a dental implant
  • To improve the appearance of a severely discoloured or misshapen tooth

Crowns can be fabricated from zirconia, lithium disilicate, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or all-metal. The choice depends on the location, loading, and aesthetic requirements of the individual case.

When Is a Bridge Used?

A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring a false tooth (pontic) to the natural teeth on either side of the gap. The supporting teeth (abutments) are prepared and crowned, with the pontic suspended between them.

Bridges are a fixed, non-removable solution that restores chewing function and prevents the remaining teeth from drifting. However, they require the preparation (grinding) of otherwise healthy adjacent teeth — a consideration that often makes dental implants a preferable alternative where sufficient bone is available.

Inlays and Onlays

For teeth with moderate damage that does not justify a full crown, inlays and onlays provide an intermediate solution. These are laboratory-fabricated restorations that fit precisely into or onto the prepared tooth cavity, preserving more natural tooth structure than a crown while providing superior durability compared to a large direct filling.

At Smilecraft, our clinicians select the most appropriate restoration type for each individual case — always aiming to preserve the maximum amount of natural tooth structure while achieving a durable, functional, and aesthetic result.
