In-office professional teeth whitening delivers the fastest and most dramatic whitening results of any available method. In a single appointment of approximately 60–90 minutes, teeth can be lightened by several shades — producing a visibly brighter smile immediately after treatment.
How Does In-Office Whitening Work?
In-office whitening uses a high-concentration hydrogen peroxide gel (typically 35–40{1fb989bef746433e8d9c94095608c6d253e0d89213a6b02e9d93f978a771341e}) applied directly to the teeth by the dental professional. The gum tissue is carefully protected with a rubber dam or liquid resin barrier before the gel is applied.
The gel is left in contact with the tooth surface for a specified time, then removed and reapplied. Some systems use a light or laser to accelerate the whitening reaction, though evidence for the added benefit of light activation over the gel alone is mixed.
The entire treatment session lasts approximately 60–90 minutes. Results are immediately visible.
Who Is a Good Candidate for In-Office Whitening?
In-office whitening is most effective for:
- Extrinsic staining (discolouration caused by food, drinks, or tobacco on the outer tooth surface)
- Age-related yellowing (the natural darkening of teeth that occurs over decades)
- Patients who want fast results for a specific occasion (wedding, photoshoot, interview)
It is less effective for:
- Tetracycline staining (antibiotic-related discolouration — this may respond to prolonged at-home treatment)
- Intrinsic discolouration within the tooth structure
- Crowns, veneers, and composite restorations, which do not whiten
Post-Treatment Care
Some temporary tooth sensitivity is normal following whitening — it resolves within 24–48 hours. Patients are advised to avoid highly pigmented foods and drinks for 24–48 hours after treatment to allow the enamel pores to reseal.
