Prophyflex Treatment – The Power of Air Polishing
Air polishing — the professional cleaning technique that uses a high-pressure stream of water, air, and fine powder to remove staining, plaque, and biofilm from tooth surfaces — represents a significant advance in patient comfort and cleaning effectiveness over traditional polishing methods.
What Is Prophyflex?
The Prophyflex is a specialist air polishing device that delivers a precisely controlled jet of fine powder particles (sodium bicarbonate, glycine, or erythritol powder, depending on the application) suspended in water and air. The powder particles gently abrade and dislodge surface staining and soft deposits from tooth surfaces, including areas that are difficult to reach with conventional instruments.
Applications
Supragingival air polishing: Removes extrinsic staining (from coffee, tea, wine, tobacco) and plaque from accessible tooth surfaces and shallow gum pockets. The result is a noticeably cleaner, brighter tooth surface — without the noise and vibration of traditional rubber cup polishing.
Subgingival air polishing: Using fine glycine or erythritol powder, the Prophyflex can also be directed below the gum line to disrupt the biofilm in periodontal pockets — an application that is particularly valuable in the supportive therapy of periodontal patients.
Advantages over Traditional Polishing
- Gentler on enamel and restorations
- Reaches interproximal and subgingival areas more effectively
- More comfortable for the patient — less mechanical sensation
- Faster: cleans multiple surfaces simultaneously
- Excellent stain removal without abrasive paste
At Smilecraft, Prophyflex air polishing is an integral part of our professional cleaning and hygiene maintenance programme. Patients consistently report high satisfaction with the comfort and visible results of this treatment.
